The Kwara State House of Assembly has formally approved the 2026 Appropriation Bill, a revised budget totalling ₦656.5 billion, marking an upward adjustment of ₦10.5 billion from the figure originally proposed by the governor’s office.
The passage came on Friday, January 30, 2026, following detailed deliberations and the presentation of the Committee on Finance and Appropriation’s report during plenary session.
Key Highlights of the 2026 Budget
Total Budget: ₦656.5 billion (after legislative adjustment)
Increase from Original Proposal: ₦10.5 billion
Recurrent Expenditure: Now above ₦409.6 billion, reflecting the upward revision from the original estimate
Capital Expenditure: Raised to ₦271 billion, up from the previously proposed ₦254 billion — earmarked to strengthen infrastructure and development projects across the state
Debt Servicing: Increased moderately to ₦14.2 billion
Assembly’s Justification & Oversight
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, explained that the budget’s upward revision was the result of meticulous scrutiny and an effort to ensure fiscal realism and alignment with Kwara’s development priorities. He said the adjustments will help fast-track critical investment in infrastructure and public services.
He added that the legislature will continue to maintain strong oversight to ensure the prudent and efficient implementation of the budget for the benefit of all residents of the state.
Context From the Executive’s Proposal
Earlier, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had presented the original ₦644 billion budget to the House, outlining plans focused on project completion, security enhancement, and welfare improvements, including a significant teachers’ allowance.
