The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully rescued two suspected ‘one chance’ robbery suspects from a violent mob in the Utako area of Abuja, authorities say. The incident occurred following a distress call received by the Utako Police Division on Thursday morning, prompting a swift police response.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, operatives arrived on the scene to find an irate crowd assaulting the suspects — identified as Kefas Akaye and Uya Ugwowere — before they were extracted and taken into protective custody.
Police sources said preliminary investigations revealed that the two men are members of a four‑man gang involved in “one chance” robbery operations within the FCT, a criminal tactic where perpetrators pose as passengers and drivers to lure and rob unsuspecting commuters.
Two other alleged members of the gang, known only as Mary and Aisha, reportedly escaped during the commotion and are currently being sought by police.
Police Warning Against Jungle Justice
In an official statement condemning the mob action, the FCT Police Command reiterated that jungle justice undermines the rule of law, endangers lives, and hampers ongoing investigations by destroying critical evidence.
The command urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspicious activity or criminal behavior to the nearest police station for lawful intervention.
“One chance” robbery — a prevalent security threat in Abuja and surrounding areas — involves criminals posing as commercial drivers and passengers to lure, rob, and sometimes abduct victims.
Security experts have highlighted that these gangs often operate along busy routes, targeting commuters using deceptive tactics to gain trust before committing robbery or extortion.
