United Capital to Hold Memorial for Staff Lost in Afriland Towers Fire
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa – Lagos, Nigeria
United Capital Plc has confirmed the tragic loss of six of its staff members in the devastating fire that engulfed Afriland Towers in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
In a solemn statement released on Thursday, the investment banking group expressed its deepest sorrow over the incident, calling the deceased “valued members of our family whose lives were cut short in the line of duty.” The company also announced plans to hold a memorial service to honor their lives and contributions.
“We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our colleagues in the unfortunate fire incident. Our prayers are with their families, friends, and everyone affected,” the company said in the statement shared on its official LinkedIn page.
The fire, which reportedly started around midday, led to chaos as people scrambled to evacuate the high-rise building. Eyewitnesses told The Guardian Nigeria that rescue efforts were initially hampered by poor emergency response and lack of accessible fire exits.
Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the inferno, although early reports suggest it may have been triggered by an electrical fault. Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that over a dozen people were injured, and several businesses were affected (Source: Channels TV, September 17, 2025).
United Capital said grief counselors and support systems are already in place to help affected families and colleagues navigate the difficult period.
“We will continue to support the families of the deceased and ensure their legacies are not forgotten,” the statement added.
The memorial service is scheduled to take place next week, with further details expected soon.
This tragic event has once again spotlighted building safety standards and emergency preparedness in Nigeria’s commercial hubs.
