I’m at Peace with My Principal – Gov. Fubara Declares After Meeting Tinubu

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has publicly declared that he is “at peace” with his political principal following a high-level meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja on Monday.
The announcement comes after months of intense political tensions and power tussles in Rivers State, largely centered around the strained relationship between Governor Fubara and his predecessor and political benefactor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
“We are at peace. There’s no problem. Proper peace has returned to Rivers State,” Fubara told reporters after the closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
The statement signals what could be a turning point in the prolonged political crisis that has rocked the oil-rich state since Fubara assumed office in May 2023.
According to reports by The Punch and Channels TV, President Tinubu had earlier intervened in the political standoff in late 2023, urging both factions to maintain peace in the interest of development and governance. Monday’s meeting appears to be a follow-up to consolidate that peace agreement.
Fubara’s comments also come amid speculation that he may be seeking political independence from Wike ahead of future elections. However, his recent tone suggests a move toward reconciliation.
“We are focused on delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Rivers State. That is our primary assignment,” Fubara added.
Observers hope that this truce, if sustained, will stabilize governance in the state and allow the Fubara administration to implement key development projects without further distractions.
