Senate Screens Tinubu’s Nominees for NMDPRA, NUPRC Leadership

The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has begun the screening of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nominees for the top leadership positions of the country’s key petroleum regulatory agencies — the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). [1]The nominations were forwarded by President Tinubu following the resignations of the immediate past heads of both agencies — Engineer Farouk Ahmed of NMDPRA and Gbenga Komolafe of NUPRC, who stepped down after serving since their appointments under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). [2]The nominees appearing before the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources are Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed, nominated as Chief Executive Officer of the NMDPRA, and Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan, nominated as CEO of the NUPRC. During the screening exercise, both candidates outlined their visions for strengthening regulatory frameworks, promoting digitisation, enhancing investor confidence and enforcing sector discipline to unlock more value in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. [1]Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources, Senator Sumaila Kawu, said the screening is crucial to ensuring that the regulators have the experience and capacity to guide the sector during a pivotal period of growth and reform. The committee will report its findings to the Senate plenary ahead of a confirmation vote. [1]If confirmed, the new regulators will assume leadership at a time when Nigeria seeks to deepen reforms in its petroleum sector, enhance local content, and boost production to meet national energy goals.
