Remi Tinubu Gives Grants to Persons with Disabilities in Sokoto — Disability Empowerment Programme Underway
By Sele Media Africa | Ihuoma Amarachi
SOKOTO —As part of the nationwide Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed disability empowerment grants to persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Sokoto State. The move forms part of a broader effort to enable inclusion and support livelihoods for vulnerable citizens across the country. [1]
What Was Disbursed-
Under the scheme, beneficiaries are to receive a business‑recapitalization grant of ₦200,000 each to support existing small businesses or start new ventures. [1] – The grant forms part of a larger RHI package that targets 250 persons with disabilities per state (plus the FCT), totaling 9,500 beneficiaries nationwide. [2] – In previous states where the grant was disbursed, the First Lady urged recipients to treat the money as “a seed” — a starting point to build sustainable livelihoods
Why It Matters
The empowerment programme comes as a recognition that many Nigerians with disabilities face structural barriers to employment, economic independence, and social inclusion.
By providing capital support:- It offers a means of livelihood, helping PWDs to start or expand their businesses with dignity. – It reinforces national commitments to inclusive growth— ensuring no one is left behind under the government’s social investment agenda. – It supports the stated goals of the RHI, which include improving access to economic opportunities, reducing poverty, and uplifting vulnerable populations. [3]
Outlook & What to Watch-
Monitoring how effectively the funds are utilized by beneficiaries, and whether the grants lead to sustainable enterprises. – Observing whether frequent business support programmes become recurring or are one‑off disbursements. – Evaluating complementary social support measures (e.g. accessibility, training, market access) to ensure long-term impact.
