Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible and technology‑driven Population and Housing Census as part of efforts to strengthen data systems and support national development planning. In a statement issued by the commission, NPC Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf made the pledge during a meeting with the Population Advisory Group at the NPC headquarters in Abuja. He emphasized that the commission is preparing comprehensively for the upcoming census, which he described as one of the most critical and complex undertakings for national planning.
Dr. Yusuf highlighted the strategic role of the Population Advisory Group in ensuring that population data, demographic trends, and census outcomes are effectively mainstreamed into national planning, budgeting, and governance frameworks across Nigeria. The NPC also disclosed plans to digitize the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system nationwide, which would support an integrated digital platform for national identity management, social inclusion, and evidence‑based policy‑making. In a related development, government officials have reaffirmed the Federal Government’s broader support for a transparent and internationally acceptable census process, with emphasis on collaboration between the NPC and key ministries and agencies. The aim is to ensure that once a census date is fixed, the exercise will be executed efficiently and with credibility.
This commitment builds on prior assurances by the newly appointed NPC chairman to deliver reliable demographic data, positioning the commission as a key player in shaping Nigeria’s development trajectory through accurate population statistics. Earlier statements from the NPC also outlined a broader agenda to modernize the nation’s demographic systems, including the adoption of digital tools and technological innovations to enhance census accuracy. A credible and technology‑driven census is widely seen as essential for planning in sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social services, ensuring that government and private sector decisions are supported by reliable population data.
