CHINA VOWS ‘SUPPORT’ FOR CUBA AMID U.S. THREATS, OPPOSITION TO LONG-STANDING BLOCKADE

Beijing, China — The Chinese government has reiterated its commitment to provide “support and assistance” to Cuba in response to renewed threats and escalating pressure from the United States, while strongly opposing the decades-long U.S. economic blockade on the Caribbean island. In a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun condemned what Beijing describes as hostile U.S. actions toward Havana. Guo emphasized that China stands firmly with Cuba, urging Washington to halt measures undermining regional peace and stability and to immediately lift the economic blockade and sanctions that have constrained Cuba for more than 60 years. The pledge comes amid heightened tensions after U.S. President Donald Trump issued ultimatums to Cuba, including warnings that the island is “ready to fall” and demands that Havana “make a deal” with the United States or face deeper consequences similar to those inflicted on Venezuela. China and Cuba maintain a long-standing socialist alliance, with Beijing historically opposing Washington’s embargo and unilateral sanctions. Chinese officials have repeatedly called on the United States to end its blockade and remove Cuba from the U.S. “state sponsors of terrorism” list, framing the blockade as a violation of international law and a hindrance to Cuban development.
In response to the U.S. pressure campaign — which recently included strategic moves against Cuba’s allies such as Venezuela — China has vowed to offer assistance within its capacity and expressed confidence that the Cuban people would withstand these challenges under their government’s leadership. The situation underscores the growing diplomatic rift between Beijing and Washington over influence and stability in the Caribbean and Latin America, where international actors continue to jockey for strategic and ideological alignment.
