Notorious IPOB Commander Chukwujekwu Ugwu a.k.a “Jekwu” Arrested by Nigerian Police at Beer Parlour in Akwuke!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a notorious commander of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as Chukwujekwu Ugwu, popularly known as “Jekwu.”
The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at a beer parlour located in Akwuke community, Awkunanaw Area of Enugu State, following credible intelligence on his movements.
According to police sources, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit stormed the location at about 12:45 a.m. Jekwu reportedly attempted to flee upon sighting the operatives but was swiftly intercepted and arrested without resistance.
Accusations and Alleged Crimes
Security authorities allege that Jekwu played a key role in several violent attacks on security personnel and civilians across Enugu State. He is specifically accused of coordinating assaults on patrol teams of the Distress Response Squad (DRS), including:
December 27, 2025: Attack on a police patrol team along Ziks Avenue, Uwani
January 15, 2026: Assault on police officers along Agbani Road
Police officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing, adding that other members of the suspect’s network remain at large, while efforts are being intensified to track them down and recover weapons used in the attacks.
Security Implications
The arrest comes amid intensified security operations against separatist-linked violence in Nigeria’s South-East. While IPOB leadership has consistently denied involvement in violent activities and has rejected allegations linking the group to insecurity, Nigerian security agencies insist they will continue pursuing individuals suspected of armed attacks against the state.
