Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has ignited fresh debate online after revealing that he is currently pursuing a divorce — a decision he says is driven by his desire to marry multiple wives.
The acclaimed Nollywood director made the comments during a watch party for his latest film, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens, where he reflected on his upbringing and family background. According to Afolayan, growing up in a polygamous household shaped his view on marriage and legacy.
Afolayan explained that he is “in and out of court seeking a divorce… so I can marry many wives now,” a statement that has since been widely shared and reacted to on social media. He credited his success in part to his late father’s choice to have multiple spouses. “Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan,” he said, noting that he was the seventh child born in a family where his father had ten wives.
For Afolayan, polygamy isn’t merely a personal preference — it’s a legacy. “For the men, marry many women… If my father didn’t, he would not have born me,” he added, encouraging men to consider multiple marriages for continuity and posterity.
However, his remarks represent a notable shift from past public statements. In a 2021 interview, Afolayan had previously rejected the idea of polygamy, citing the familial challenges he witnessed firsthand as a child in a large polygamous family.
Social Media Reaction & Public Discourse
The filmmaker’s newfound endorsement of polygamy has sparked significant reactions online, with many questioning the idea of promoting multiple marriages as a model for legacy and continuity. Critics argue that polygamy brings complex dynamics and responsibilities, while supporters often cite cultural or traditional reasons for the practice.
Across Africa and beyond, debates on polygamy continue to draw mixed opinions. Some see it as tied to cultural heritage and family structure, while others raise concerns about gender equality, individual autonomy, and societal impact.
