Kwara Reverts Transport Operators’ Daily Ticketing to Old Rates!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
In a swift response to growing discontent among commercial transport operators and commuters, the Kwara State Government has officially reversed the recently increased daily ticketing levy, restoring the charges to their original rates. The move is aimed at easing tensions within the state’s transport sector following widespread concerns over the alleged hike in levies imposed on operators.
According to a statement issued by the Kwara State Ministry of Transportation, the decision followed extensive engagements between government officials and recognised transport unions operating in the state. The Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Aliyu Korasabi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining peace, order, and fairness within the transport system.
The ministry explained that the controversy surrounding the levy increase stemmed from misinformation circulating on social media regarding the authority to impose transport charges. The government stressed that only recognised and duly registered transport unions are permitted to collect levies within Kwara State.
As part of the intervention, daily ticketing charges have been restored to their former rates to reduce the financial burden on transport operators and commuters.
Government officials also reiterated that the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Allied Truck Transporters Association of Nigeria (ATTAN) are not recognised by the Kwara State Government and must comply with regulatory requirements before operating within the state.
While urging calm, the Commissioner called on all stakeholders to embrace dialogue and cooperation, warning that actions capable of disrupting public order would attract appropriate sanctions.
The development comes amid broader national challenges, as rising fuel prices and economic pressures continue to drive up transport costs across several parts of Nigeria.
