“I Will Be the First Igbo President in 2039”… Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Declares, Tells Peter Obi to “Stop Working Over It”!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North in the National Assembly, has made a bold and unusual declaration about his future political destiny, stating that he will become the first Igbo President of Nigeria in 2039 — a statement he said was backed by prophecy.
According to multiple social media posts circulating on Tuesday, the former governor of Abia State reportedly told journalists that his political future is not confined to the current electoral cycle but destined to culminate in the nation’s highest office in 2039. He urged former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to “stop working” against that perceived destiny, insisting the prophecy concerning his presidency “must come to pass.”
Senator Kalu’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions within Nigeria’s political class about power rotation, zoning, and representation. Kalu formally served as Abia State governor from 1999 to 2007 and later moved into national politics, currently representing Abia North in the Senate. He has previously raised issues of regional equity and advocated for greater inclusion of Igbo interests in national politics.
Although the prophecy-based comment is gaining traction online, no verified reports from major Nigerian news outlets confirm that the senator made this specific prophecy claim in a formal press briefing or interview. Some of the posts appear to originate from social media platforms, where political claims often circulate without official attribution.
Kalu has, in the past, publicly discussed his presidential ambitions, though he has said those plans are on hold in deference to his party’s current priorities. In June 2025, he told journalists his personal presidential ambition was “in the cooler” while he supports President Bola Tinubu’s agenda and the APC’s chosen roadmap up to 2031.
Political analysts note that Nigeria’s unwritten zoning arrangement traditionally rotates the presidency among major geopolitical zones, and the South-East — predominantly populated by the Igbo ethnic group — has never produced a democratically elected president since the return to civilian rule in 1999. As preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, leading figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other national actors are positioning for influence, although it remains speculative who will lead the country thereafter.
Kalu’s latest claim, rooted in metaphysical prophecy, is already fueling debate on social media about political destiny, ethnic representation in the presidency, and the role of prophetic beliefs in Nigerian political discourse.
