Fulani Herdsmen Set Rice Farm Ablaze in Benue, Threatening Local Livelihoods!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
In a distressing incident Sunday afternoon at Tse Orbiam along the Naka–Makurdi road in Gwer West LGA of Benue State, suspected Fulani herdsmen reportedly torched the rice farm of Mr. Ugbakayaa. Eyewitness Mr. Ado Bartholomew says the blaze consumed several hectares of standing crop and tens of bags of harvested rice gathered for threshing.
The Ugbakayaa family, whose farm serves as their sole source of income, has been left devastated. Local farmers and community members condemned the act, calling on security agencies and the federal government to protect farming communities in the region.
This latest attack adds to a mounting toll of violence in Benue State: in June 2025 alone, a brutal overnight raid in the Guma area by gunmen believed to be herders killed at least 100 people and destroyed homes, according to a report by Amnesty International. [1]
Agriculture officials caution the continuing disruptions risk deepening food‑security concerns in Nigeria’s “Food Basket” region. [2]
The rural community demands urgent, visible action to safeguard farmers and halt the cycle of destruction.
