A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, setting the stage for a potentially intense political contest in one of Nigeriaโs key South-West states.
Sowunmi, a former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a notable figure within the PDP, made the declaration during an interactive virtual engagement with supporters and members of the press on Tuesday. He cited what he described as persistent development gaps and governance challenges in Ogun State as the driving force behind his decision.
According to him, Ogun State has failed to fully harness its strategic advantages particularly its proximity to Lagos State, Nigeriaโs economic hub โ while suffering from policy inconsistency and governance discontinuity. He lamented that key sectors such as healthcare, education and security have been negatively affected by what he termed inadequate leadership focus.
โWe need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan, but to work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state,โ Sowunmi said, stressing the need for structural reforms in governance.
He further noted that Ogunโs historical relevance and economic potential as a regional growth hub remain largely under-leveraged, calling for a leadership approach anchored on people-centred development and measurable outcomes.
Sowunmi emphasised that his ambition is driven by a desire to correct what he described as development lapses, particularly in infrastructure and public service delivery, which he believes have left many residents underserved. He argued that Ogun should evolve beyond being a transit corridor into a model state for inclusive and sustainable development.
The PDP chieftain also acknowledged ongoing political realignments within and outside the party, noting that he is closely monitoring developments across the political landscape ahead of the party primaries.
Meanwhile, political analysts observe that Ogunโs political atmosphere is already warming up ahead of the 2027 elections, with various stakeholders positioning early. The current administration has continued to highlight achievements in revenue generation, infrastructure development and education, including road construction and airport certification, which may influence voter sentiment.
The declaration marks a significant moment in Ogun Stateโs pre-election cycle and signals renewed efforts by the PDP to strengthen its political footing ahead of the 2027 polls.
