Victor Osimhen Ruled Out of South Africa Clash Due to Injury
Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have been dealt a significant blow as star striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the crucial match against South Africa due to injury.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that Osimhen sustained a muscle strain during his recent appearance for Galatasaray, where he is currently on loan from Napoli. The injury occurred during a match against Kasimpasa, in which Osimhen scored twice before being substituted due to discomfort. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed a strain and bleeding in the muscle group, necessitating a recovery period that will see him miss the upcoming international fixtures. [1]
In light of Osimhen’s absence, Super Eagles’ head coach Finidi George has called up Enugu Rangers’ defender Kenneth Igboke as a replacement. The coaching staff is now tasked with restructuring the team’s attacking lineup ahead of the matches against South Africa on June 7 in Uyo and Benin Republic on June 10 in Abidjan. [2]
Osimhen’s injury is a significant setback for Nigeria, especially considering his pivotal role in the team’s offensive strategies. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the Super Eagles aim to secure vital points in their quest for World Cup qualification.
