Peter Obi Slams Rivers LG Polls, Calls It a Tragedy for Democracy

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent local government elections in Rivers State, describing the process as “rascality taken too far” and “a double tragedy for our democracy.”

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi criticized the appointment of a Sole Administrator to oversee the polls—calling the individual “illegally appointed” and insisting that such a move undermines democratic values and the people’s right to choose their leaders.

“This is not democracy; it is the outright desecration of its very foundation,” Obi declared.

The elections, held on Saturday, saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) sweep 20 out of 23 local government areas, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with just three.

The process has sparked widespread criticism and outrage. Opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have also condemned the election, labeling it a “travesty to the very notion of elective democracy.”
