NFSS Seeks Recognition After Role in Abuja Robbery Suspects’ Arrest!

Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa

The Nigeria Forest Security Service (NFSS) has publicly claimed that its operatives played a key supporting role in the recent arrest of armed robbery suspects in Abuja. The agency is now calling for formal legal recognition to expand its mandate. [1]

What the NFSS Says

  • According to Abdulhakeem Ibrahim, Assistant Commander‑General, North Central Zonal Command of NFSS, his team assisted the police to apprehend five suspects linked to a gang that struck in Zuba, FCT. [1]
  • The NFSS operatives, acting on police instructions, established a checkpoint near a hotel where the gang had previously attacked. When the gang returned, they ran into the checkpoint and tried to flee. Their driver was caught and handed over to the police. [1]
  • Following further investigation, other suspects were arrested and firearms and ammunition recovered, including an AK‑47, a pump‑action gun, and a Beretta pistol. [1]
  • The NFSS has urged the government to give the agency legal backing so it can more effectively support security operations. [1]

Why It Matters

  • The NFSS is seeking formal recognition so it can act more overtly in joint operations without ambiguity over its mandate and authority.
  • Such recognition could expand its role from forest protection to include broader public security support, especially in rural and peri‑urban areas.
  • However, questions remain about oversight, jurisdiction boundaries with police and other security agencies, and accountability.
