Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
As part of 2025’s Green Diplomacy Week, the European Union and the German Embassy in Nigeria have jointly launched the German–Nigerian Flare4Value Project — a major initiative to combat gas flaring and promote cleaner, more sustainable energy in Nigeria.
About the Initiative:
- The Flare4Value project aims to reduce harmful gas flaring by converting wasted gas into valuable energy resources.
- It is designed to support Nigeria’s commitments to climate action under the Paris Agreement and improve energy efficiency.
- The initiative also seeks to create jobs, attract green investment, and support local innovation in the energy sector.
Key Objectives:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to oil production.
- Promote gas capture, reprocessing, and commercial use.
- Build technical capacity and regulatory frameworks for flare reduction.
Why It Matters:
- Nigeria is one of the top gas-flaring nations globally — a major environmental and economic concern.
- This project signals growing international collaboration to help Nigeria transition to a low-carbon economy.
- It also aligns with EU–Africa climate partnerships focused on clean energy, resilience, and sustainability.
