FG Reports Decline in Food Prices, Says Crop Production Has Increased!

The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria is witnessing a gradual decline in food prices and a corresponding increase in crop production, according to the recently released 2025 Agricultural Performance Survey.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He noted that the improvement is largely due to government interventions in mechanised farming, distribution of improved seedlings, and support to local farmers through financial schemes.
“The 2025 Agricultural Performance Survey shows that despite earlier inflationary trends, we are now recording modest but steady drops in the prices of staple foods like maize, rice, and sorghum in key markets across the country,” Kyari said.
He added that climate-smart farming practices and increased security around farming zones in the North-East and Middle Belt have also contributed to increased output.
The minister, however, admitted that challenges still remain, including logistics, storage, and the lingering effects of flooding in some states, but expressed optimism that further reforms under President Tinubu’s food security agenda will deepen the gains.
The report was compiled with input from researchers, federal agencies, and agricultural extension workers across the 36 states.
