Sweden to Pay Immigrants 34,000 to Voluntarily Return Home from 2026
Sele Media Africa | October 2, 2025
In a surprising move aimed at tackling rising immigration pressures and integration challenges, Sweden has announced a new policy to pay immigrants up to 34,000 (approximately 380,000 SEK) if they voluntarily agree to return to their home countries, starting in 2026.
The program, which was introduced by Sweden’s Migration Minister, seeks to reduce the strain on public services and offer a “dignified and humane” path for voluntary repatriation. According to local Swedish outlets and global platforms like Euronews and BBC, the offer will be available to immigrants whose asylum applications have been rejected or those who no longer wish to remain in the country.
Authorities say the payout is intended to assist returnees with reintegration costs back home. However, the move has sparked mixed reactions across Europe, with critics arguing that it may encourage xenophobia or signal a retreat from Sweden’s long-standing humanitarian stance.
Sweden has seen a significant shift in its migration policies in recent years, especially after the rise of right-wing parties influencing national policy debates.
