2026 World Cup: CAF Confirms Morocco as Host for African Playoffs!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that Morocco will host the high-stakes African playoff tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. The tournament, set for November 2025, will determine the final African team to secure a spot at the expanded global showpiece.
Key Details:
- CAF confirmed that the playoff matches will be held in Morocco between November 10 and 14, 2025.
- Six teams will participate — made up of the four best runners-up from the CAF group stage and two highest-ranked non-qualifying teams based on FIFA rankings.
- The winner of the mini-tournament will secure one of Africa’s 10 total slots (9 direct, 1 intercontinental) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- All matches will be played in Rabat and Casablanca, with stadiums already inspected and approved by FIFA.
Why It Matters:
- The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, will be the first to feature 48 teams, giving Africa more qualifying opportunities.
- Morocco’s selection comes after its successful co-host bid (with Spain and Portugal) for the 2030 World Cup and its growing global football profile.
CAF’s Statement:
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said, “Morocco continues to demonstrate excellence in football hosting and infrastructure. This decision aligns with our vision of delivering world-class tournaments on African soil.”
