The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to content creators, influencers, and digital media producers against involving children in online content that violates child rights protections, threatening a clampdown and possible criminal sanctions against offenders .
In a joint statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the government stressed that children are a legally protected class under Nigerian law and must not be featured in content that undermines their dignity, safety, or psychological wellbeing .
The statement warned that the use of minors in content depicting abuse, sexual themes, harmful stereotypes, or unsafe situations is both unethical and unlawful. Content creators, distributors, or individuals who profit from such material may face criminal prosecution under relevant state and federal laws .
Officials cited provisions of the Lagos State Child’s Rights Law (2015) and the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015), which prohibit exploitative child labour, abuse, and sexual offences involving minors, noting that violations could lead to prosecution .
The warning comes amid growing concern over the increasing use of children in online content and fears that such exposure could lead to psychological harm, exploitation, or endangerment .
Lagos authorities said the planned clampdown forms part of the state’s broader commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that digital and social media platforms comply with legal and ethical standards safeguarding minors.
Context
Nigeria operates a framework of child-protection laws, including the Child Rights Act and corresponding state regulations, aimed at shielding minors from abuse and exploitation in both traditional and digital media. In recent years, enforcement actions and public awareness campaigns have intensified to strengthen child safety nationwide.
