Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the country’s general election, paving the way for his predecessor, Peter Mutharika, to return to power. In a national broadcast, Chakwera congratulated Mutharika and urged Malawians to remain united for the sake of peace and development. He said his decision to accept the outcome was to uphold democracy and avoid division in the nation.Mutharika, who previously served as president from 2014 to 2020, welcomed the concession, promising to restore stability and strengthen Malawi’s economy.Observers described the election as largely peaceful, despite reports of irregularities in some districts. The transition is expected to take place in the coming days under the supervision of the Malawi Electoral Commission. Chakwera’s concession marks a rare show of political maturity in the region.
