The Women In Mining In Nigeria (WIMIN) has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent revocation of mineral licences, describing it as a bold step that will sanitise the mining sector and unleash the country’s lithium potential.
In a statement, the group said the decision will help address issues of hoarding, speculation, and under-utilisation of Nigeria’s rich mineral resources. Lithium, a critical component for batteries used in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, has placed Nigeria in the spotlight as global demand surges.
According to WIMIN, the clean-up of the sector will create opportunities for genuine investors, boost local participation, and promote transparency, ultimately positioning Nigeria as a major player in the global energy transition.
The association also urged government to ensure that women and local communities benefit from the emerging opportunities in lithium mining and value-chain development.
