Heart-wrenching tales have emerged from survivors of the devastating fire that engulfed AfriLand Tower, a high-rise building in Victoria Island, Lagos, earlier this week.

Several occupants described a terrifying scene as thick smoke and flames quickly spread through the building. According to one survivor, who asked to remain anonymous, the fire began shortly after a prolonged power outage, which was unusual for the building.

“Power outages are typically resolved in minutes through the inverters,” he said. “But this time, over 20 minutes passed, and then the chaos started. We heard shouting, then alarms.”

Eyewitnesses say the fire, which broke out on the upper floors, quickly descended, trapping workers and visitors inside. Some were rescued through windows and led to safety by emergency responders, while others sustained injuries from smoke inhalation or attempted escapes.

LASEMA, Lagos Fire Service, and other emergency agencies responded swiftly, but the fire’s intensity made rescue efforts extremely challenging.

No official fatality figure has been confirmed yet, but several people have been hospitalized. The Lagos State Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and promised to enhance building safety enforcement across the state.

“This is a wake-up call,” said a spokesperson from LASEMA. “We need to ensure all commercial buildings have adequate fire protection systems in place.”

The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of high-rise buildings in Nigeria’s commercial hubs and the enforcement of building codes.
