Zulu King Challenges Cultural Critic to Traditional Stick Fight Amid Reed Dance Controversy
OPHONGOLO, South Africa — Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has publicly challenged cultural analyst Professor Musa Xulu to a traditional stick fight, accusing him of disrespecting both the monarch and the Zulu nation. The confrontation occurred during the annual Umkhosi woMhlanga (Reed Dance) ceremony, held for the first time at the newly constructed eMashobeni Royal Palace in oPhongolo, KwaZulu-Natal.
Addressing thousands of attendees, including dignitaries such as former President Jacob Zuma and KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli, King Misuzulu criticized Professor Xulu for his repeated public commentary, which the king deemed insulting. He urged the media to consult other scholars like Professors Jabulani Maphalala, Otty Nxumalo, and Sihawu Ngubane for insights into Zulu culture and royal affairs.
“If his friends are here, go and tell him that there is a fighting ring if he wants a stick fight because I can take him up,” the king declared, emphasizing that a stick is traditionally used to discipline an ill-disciplined person. [1]
In response, Professor Xulu, who holds multiple doctorates in cultural studies, expressed concern for his safety and criticized the king’s remarks as inciting hostility. He defended his role as an independent analyst, stating that his academic insights are sought after for their depth and objectivity.
“He always wants a war with me. I am an independent analyst with a PhD in cultural studies. Does he want me to be his praise singer?” Xulu retorted. [2]
The Reed Dance, a celebration of chastity and cultural heritage, was attended by thousands of Zulu maidens and marked a significant cultural event in the Zulu calendar. Premier Ntuli announced plans to enhance infrastructure at the eMashobeni Palace to establish it as a permanent venue for the ceremony, aiming to boost tourism and local development.
This incident underscores ongoing tensions within the Zulu royal discourse and highlights the challenges of balancing traditional authority with contemporary cultural critique.
