Yusuf Gagdi Rejects Governor Mutfwang’s Call for State Police in Plateau!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
Despite renewed pressure from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other state leaders for the creation of state police, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency, has firmly rejected the idea.
Speaking during a visit to several attacked and displaced communities in Kanam LGA on Sunday, Gagdi said he had “never supported” the push for state-controlled police forces.
Key Quote
“I have never been in support of the clamour for state police. Governors will use it to witch-hunt their political enemies,” Gagdi said, adding that Nigeria is not ready for the decentralization of police control.
Background
Governor Mutfwang has consistently advocated for the creation of state police as a way to tackle insecurity, especially in areas repeatedly targeted by bandits and armed militias in Plateau State.
Proponents argue that state police would improve community-level security and response times. But critics, like Gagdi, fear it could lead to abuse of power by governors, particularly against opposition figures.
Recent Insecurity in Plateau
The lawmaker’s comments come in the wake of fresh attacks in parts of Kanam LGA, which have left scores displaced. While inspecting affected areas, Gagdi called for stronger federal interventions and humanitarian aid for victims, emphasizing the role of national security agencies.
Political Angle
Analysts suggest the growing divide between Mutfwang’s position and Gagdi’s reflects broader tensions within the Plateau political class over the balance of power between state and federal authorities.
