“You’ve No Advantage Holding Him” — Ohanaeze President Tells FG Over Nnamdi Kanu Detention
The President‑General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Azuta‑Mbata, has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), saying the government holds no real advantage in keeping him in custody. Speaking in a video message, Azuta‑Mbata urged the Igbo people to engage in the ongoing voter registration exercise, noting that political inclusion and democratic participation now are crucial. [1]He emphasized that the continued detention of Kanu, who has been in DSS custody since 2021, does little to advance justice or peace. Instead, Azuta‑Mbata suggested the situation may worsen divisions unless addressed through political, not only judicial, means. Ohanaeze called for Kanu’s safety and welfare to be ensured, and for him to be allowed access to medical treatment. They also reiterated that a “political solution” is needed, believing that the government stands to gain more by releasing him than by continuing detention.
