‘You slap your LGI?’: Many React as Man Passes Out of NYSC After 2 Years!

A Nigerian man has sparked reactions online after he finally completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme after an unusually long two-year journey.
In a post shared on X, the man, identified as @maaxthewave, recounted his experience and reflected on the challenges he faced before successfully passing out of the compulsory one-year national service scheme.
According to the account, he was first mobilised for NYSC on November 1, 2023, completing orientation camp later that month. However, in February 2024, he absconded from service to attend law school, cutting short his service year.
After finishing law school, he returned in November 2024 and sought to resume his NYSC service. Due to NYSC rules, he was required to restart the entire service year afresh. Though he began the remobilisation process in November, it was only approved in January 2025, extending his service period and leading to his eventual passing out much later than usual.
The extended timeline drew widespread attention on social media, where netizens reacted with humorous and incredulous comments — with some jokingly asking, “You slap your LGI?” in reference to the Local Government Inspector (LGI), who plays a key role in NYSC administrative clearances.
The NYSC scheme is a mandatory one-year national service for Nigerian graduates, designed to foster unity and national development. Participants undergo an initial orientation camp, are posted to places of primary assignment (PPAs), and complete community service activities before the passing-out ceremony and issuance of a discharge certificate.
This man’s story reflects some of the complexities that can arise when a corps member interrupts service — including remobilisation requirements that can significantly prolong the overall duration of service.
