“You Can’t Impose APC Governor on Plateau in 2027, the People Are Happy With Mutfwang” – PDP Tells Yilwatda

The Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to abandon any thoughts of imposing a governor on the state in 2027, insisting that the people of Plateau remain firmly behind Governor Caleb Mutfwang.Prof. Yilwatda, who contested and lost to Mutfwang in the 2023 governorship election, had during a live radio programme in Jos on Wednesday declared that Governor Mutfwang would only serve one term as the APC was “ready to reclaim the state” in the next polls. But in a strongly worded reaction on Thursday, the PDP Publicity Secretary in Plateau State, Jonathan Amande, dismissed Yilwatda’s remarks as “a figment of his imagination” and “mere rhetoric” aimed at giving APC supporters false hope. “Only the people of Plateau can decide who governs them. The idea of installing a governor by the APC is not only far-fetched but a rude attempt to massage the ego of the APC,” Amande said.PDP Defends Mutfwang’s Popularity Amande maintained that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has gone beyond being just a state leader to becoming the “people’s governor”, admired across communities for his people-centered policies. According to him, the governor’s rising popularity reflects the PDP’s strong governance record and unmatched grassroots structures across all wards and local governments in Plateau State. He argued that leadership in Plateau cannot be reduced to personal ambition or political rhetoric, stressing that qualities such as broad-based acceptance, proven capacity, and credibility before the electorate are essential for winning elections—qualities the PDP has consistently demonstrated.Focus on Unity and DevelopmentThe Plateau PDP spokesman further emphasized that the party remains committed to consolidating democratic gains, strengthening internal unity, and working closely with citizens ahead of the 2027 elections. “Our focus remains on strengthening our unity, consolidating democratic gains, and working closely with the people to ensure more progress and development in the state,” Amande stated. He urged PDP members and supporters to remain steadfast, assuring them that the party is fully prepared to once again earn the people’s mandate. “We will engage voters constructively, emphasizing fairness, accountability, and service delivery as our guiding principles going into 2027. The PDP is ready, and the people of Plateau are solidly with us,” he added. With this exchange, the political atmosphere in Plateau continues to heat up as both major parties begin early positioning for the 2027 governorship race.
