Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
In commemoration of 2025 World Stroke Day, Stroke Action Nigeria has launched a nationwide campaign in collaboration with hospitals and health professionals to raise awareness on prevention, early detection, and recovery from strokes.
What We Know:
- The theme this year is “Together We Can Stop Strokes,” urging Nigerians to learn the warning signs and embrace healthy lifestyles.
- Free screenings, educational sessions, and survivor support groups were held across major cities.
- The campaign stresses the importance of the FAST method: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services.
Quote:
“Stroke is beatable if we act fast. Nigerians must understand the signs and take control of their health,”
— Rita Melifonwu, CEO, Stroke Action Nigeria
Why It Matters:
- Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in Nigeria, often due to late response and lack of awareness.
- Early detection, proper medication, and rehabilitation can greatly reduce its impact.
- Public health partnerships like this help bridge gaps in awareness and access to care.
What to Watch:
- Expansion of stroke education in rural areas.
- Government support for nationwide stroke response systems.
- Outcomes of ongoing patient rehabilitation efforts.
