Withdraw Cybercrime Charges Against Sowore – SERAP, Amnesty Tell Tinubu
Reported by David Joshua
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Amnesty International Nigeria have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately order the withdrawal of cybercrime charges filed against human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
In a joint statement released on Saturday, the two rights groups condemned the charges, describing them as an assault on free expression and civic space in Nigeria.
The Federal Government had filed criminal charges under the Cybercrimes Act, accusing Sowore and the platforms of publishing allegedly offensive content critical of the President.
SERAP and Amnesty insisted that such charges are “politically motivated, unlawful, and intended to silence dissent.” They further argued that prosecuting citizens and platforms for expressing critical views violates Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights obligations, especially the right to freedom of expression.
“This is a clear misuse of the Cybercrimes Act to target voices critical of the government. President Tinubu must end this dangerous trend,” SERAP stated. Amnesty International also warned that continued repression of activists and journalists could worsen Nigeria’s global human rights standing and stifle democratic engagement.
The rights groups urged Tinubu to instead prioritize reforms that promote accountability, transparency, and protect civil liberties, especially as Nigeria faces numerous governance and economic challenges.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has faced multiple arrests and court cases under successive administrations.
