Wike Slams Sowore Over His Post Calling Tinubu a “Criminal
Reported by Marian opeyemi Fasesan
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized activist Omoyele Sowore after Sowore labeled President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in a social media post. Wike expressed surprise that such a statement hasn’t led to harsh consequences, saying Nigeria is fortunate under Tinubu because he respects the rule of law. [1] “This is a country where somebody on social media will say Mr President is a criminal; nothing will happen,” Wike said at the official launch of the Care365 Innovation System in Abuja. [1] He compared this to other countries, asking rhetorically whether any American has publicly called Trump a criminal without repercussions. [1]Meanwhile, Sowore’s post led to legal actions: the State Security Service (SSS) reportedly asked social media platforms to take down the post, and also filed a lawsuit against him. [2] What This Means: – Wike is urging Nigerians to appreciate that, despite deep criticism, Tinubu remains in office because of certain legal protections and democratic norms.- There is a tension between free speech and defamation/political accountability in Nigeria. – Sowore’s case highlights the risks faced by activists when criticizing political leaders.
