Wike Pledges Support Only for Candidates Aligned With Tinubu’s Agenda!

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will back only candidates who support the policy direction of President Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming FCT area council elections, regardless of their political party affiliations.
Wike made the position known during recent political engagements in Abuja, underscoring that his support would be driven by alignment with the president’s governance agenda rather than strict party loyalty. The former Rivers State governor said the priority is to ensure continuity of policies he believes are beneficial to the development of the nation’s capital.
According to the minister, political considerations in the FCT should focus on competence and commitment to the administration’s reform objectives. He emphasized that candidates who demonstrate support for Tinubu’s vision would receive his backing, even if they belong to opposition parties.
Political Implications
Wike’s stance is expected to generate debate within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he remains a prominent figure despite serving in an administration led by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Analysts say the declaration reflects Wike’s increasingly pragmatic political posture since assuming office as FCT minister. Supporters argue the approach prioritizes governance outcomes over partisan rivalry, while critics warn it could deepen intra-party tensions and blur ideological distinctions ahead of future elections.
Focus on FCT Development
The minister maintained that his overriding concern is accelerating infrastructure delivery, administrative reforms, and service improvements across the FCT’s six area councils. He urged political actors to place development above party interests, noting that Abuja’s growth requires coordinated support for federal initiatives.
The upcoming FCT council elections are widely viewed as an early test of political alignments ahead of Nigeria’s next general election cycle.
