The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has stated that arming FRSC operatives may become necessary to ensure the effective enforcement of traffic laws across Nigeria’s highways.
Speaking during an official engagement, Mohammed expressed concerns over increasing cases of violence, attacks, and disregard for traffic officers, noting that unarmed personnel are often left vulnerable while carrying out their lawful duties.
“We are not asking for arms to intimidate motorists, but to protect our men. Enforcing road laws without protection is becoming more dangerous,” he said. (channelstv.com)
Background
- Over the years, FRSC officers have been victims of attacks by armed motorists, commercial drivers, and road users, especially in remote or high-risk locations.
- Several security agencies operating on Nigerian roads — including police and customs — are armed, while FRSC remains a civilian, unarmed body, limiting its ability to respond to aggression.
Reactions & Ongoing Debate
- The proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Some argue that arming FRSC could lead to abuse of power or conflict with other security agencies.
– Others support the move, citing the need to protect officers and deter violent offenders.
Next Steps
The FRSC leadership is reportedly in discussions with relevant government bodies and the National Assembly to explore the legal and logistical framework for this proposal. Any such decision would require legislative backing and public engagement.
