UTME Fraud: 80% of Infractions Attributed to Parents — JAMB Registrar
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised concerns over the significant role parents play in examination malpractices associated with the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). According to JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, over 80% of infractions recorded during the UTME are linked to parental interference.
Speaking during a monitoring exercise of the UTME mop-up examination in Abuja, Prof. Oloyede expressed dismay at the lengths some parents go to secure unmerited success for their children. He highlighted instances where parents have been found financing examination malpractice schemes, thereby compromising the integrity of the examination process. [1]
In a bid to curb such practices, JAMB has implemented stringent measures, including the arrest of parents found loitering around Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers during examinations. The Board emphasized that any parent found near examination centers would not only face arrest but also risk having their ward disqualified from sitting the examination. [2]The Board’s recent data indicates a significant number of results withheld due to examination infractions. In the 2025 UTME, JAMB withheld 39,834 results pending investigations into various forms of malpractice, including impersonation and illegal assistance. [3]
Prof. Oloyede reiterated JAMB’s commitment to upholding the sanctity of its examinations and ensuring that merit remains the sole criterion for admission into tertiary institutions. He called on parents to desist from unethical practices and instead encourage their children to prepare adequately for examinations.
