US Shutdown: Visa, Passport Services to Continue in Nigeria — Embassy!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
Despite the ongoing partial shutdown of the U.S. federal government, the United States Embassy in Nigeria has confirmed that its consular operations — including visa and passport services — will continue uninterrupted.
What the Embassy Said
- In a public notice on October 1, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja clarified:
“U.S. Mission Nigeria remains open. Consular services at the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General continue as scheduled.” - The embassy also emphasized that applicants should keep their interview appointments and follow regular procedures for visa and passport processing.
Context
- The U.S. entered a partial government shutdown due to a budget impasse in Congress.
- While many U.S. federal agencies have scaled back operations, the Department of State — which oversees embassies and consulates — continues to offer services abroad using fee-based funding mechanisms.
What It Means for Nigerians
- Nigerians with scheduled U.S. visa interviews or passport services can proceed without disruption.
- Services such as student, tourist, immigrant, and work visas are still being processed.
