Ukraine has received the bodies of 1,000 soldiers returned by Russia in one of the first major repatriation efforts of 2026 amid the ongoing war. Officials confirmed that this transfer was part of negotiated arrangements to return the remains of fallen servicemen to their families.
According to statements from both Moscow and Kyiv, Russia handed over the remains of 1,000 individuals claimed to be Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine returned the bodies of 38 Russian servicemen in the exchange.
The operation was coordinated with the involvement of humanitarian agencies including the Red Cross, and Ukrainian authorities plan to carry out identification efforts with forensic teams to confirm the identities of the returned remains.
This transfer marks the first such exchange of fallen soldiers’ bodies in 2026, continuing a long-standing but limited area of cooperation between the two sides even as fighting persists.
