Ukpor Community Vows to Reclaim Town from ‘Unknown Gunmen’
UKPOR, Anambra State — The Ukpor community in Nnewi South Local Government Area has pledged to collaborate with the Anambra State Government and its prominent sons and daughters to restore peace and security to the area, which has been plagued by activities of unknown gunmen.
During the annual New Yam Festival (Igba Anuri Iri Ji Ukpor 2025), the traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty Igwe Dr. Felix C.N. Onyimadu, and the President-General of Ukpor Improvement Union (UIU), Hon. Barr. Ikenna Mbazulike-Amechi, expressed optimism about the return of relative peace to the community.
“Ukpor used to be a den of unknown gunmen, but with the support of our eminent sons and daughters, and the present administration of Governor Charles Soludo, we have taken the community back,” said Dim Remy Nnakife, Chairman of the Festival Planning Committee.
The community had previously suffered attacks, including the burning of part of the council headquarters and vehicles, and the killing of a security guard. In April 2025, the Anambra State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad dismantled a suspected gunmen’s camp in Ukpor, arresting one suspect. [1]
The four-day New Yam Festival, held at St. Mary’s Central School Field, featured cultural displays, communal feasting, and prayers of thanksgiving. The event was attended by representatives from all 15 villages across the community’s six zones, as well as notable figures including Senator-elect Chief Emma Nwachukwu.
The community leaders emphasized the importance of unity, cultural heritage, and collaboration in reclaiming Ukpor from criminal elements and restoring its rightful place in state and national affairs.
