In a brutal resurgence of communal violence, two youths were beheaded during a weekend clash between the communities of Ochon in Obubra LGA and their neighbours, Ofutop‑Ikom in Cross River State. [1]
According to residents, the incident occurred in a cocoa plantation between the two local government areas, following what appeared to be a temporary truce. One youth described how the conflict, which had earlier moved from highway ambushes to farmlands, erupted again with machete attacks and shootings. [2]
A traditional leader from the Ofutop area confirmed the killings and expressed concern that hostilities may escalate further.“This peace agreement seemed to hold, but the war is back,” he said. [3]
Earlier this month, community elders had intervened and engaged surveyors in an attempt to resolve long‑standing land boundary disputes between the groups. Despite this, the recurrence of deadly violence signals that the root causes remain unresolved. [4]
Authorities have been urged to act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed and to protect residents who are now afraid to venture into their farms. [1]
