Trump Imposes 100,000 Annual Fee on Skilled Worker Visas
Reported by David Joshua
In a dramatic shift aimed at tightening immigration and prioritizing American workers, former United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 100,000 annual fee on companies seeking H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers.
According to a BBC report on Saturday, the executive order is part of Trump’s renewed stance on what he terms “pro-American labor reforms,” which he says are necessary to protect U.S. jobs and discourage companies from relying on foreign talent.
The H-1B visa program, widely used by tech firms and international companies to bring in software engineers, scientists, and medical professionals, has long been under scrutiny by critics who argue it undercuts wages and displaces American workers.
“For far too long, our system has allowed corporations to underpay and sideline American talent. That ends now,” Trump was quoted as saying.
The new policy is expected to face legal challenges and could spark outrage from major corporations in Silicon Valley and beyond, many of which depend on international expertise to maintain competitiveness. Analysts warn that the decision could have global implications, especially for countries like India, Nigeria, and China, which contribute a large share of H-1B applicants annually.
The executive order is seen as part of Trump’s broader strategy as he eyes another run in the 2028 U.S. presidential election.
