Trump Administration Launches ‘Operation Midway Blitz’ Immigration Raids in Chicago
The Trump administration has initiated a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Chicago, dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz,” targeting undocumented immigrants in the city and surrounding areas. The operation, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is part of a broader crackdown on so-called sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the operation aims to apprehend individuals with criminal records who have been released from local jails despite federal detainer requests. However, immigrant advocacy groups report that many of those detained have no criminal history, raising concerns about the scope and intent of the raids. Early reports indicate that arrests have occurred in public spaces, including bus stops and workplaces, causing widespread fear among immigrant communities.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized the federal action, alleging it is politically motivated and lacks proper communication with state authorities. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also condemned the raids, emphasizing the city’s commitment to protecting its immigrant residents and questioning the legality of the federal government’s approach.
The operation has sparked protests and legal challenges from local organizations, including a lawsuit filed by immigrant advocacy groups alleging violations of constitutional rights and overreach by federal agents. Community leaders are calling for transparency and adherence to due process, warning that such enforcement tactics erode trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement.
As “Operation Midway Blitz” continues, the situation remains tense, with calls for federal authorities to halt the raids and engage in dialogue with local governments to address immigration enforcement in a manner that respects human rights and community relationships.
