Tragic Loss: Bank Manager Killed Weeks After Promotion in Anambra
In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the banking community, Ifeoma Esther Onyekwelu, a regional bank manager in Anambra State, was abducted and murdered just weeks after receiving a well-deserved promotion.
Onyekwelu was kidnapped in January 2025 in Onitsha, a bustling commercial city in southeastern Nigeria. Despite her family’s efforts to secure her release by paying a ransom of ₦14 million, her lifeless body was discovered on January 15 along Nnobi Road, blindfolded and abandoned. [1]
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects, identified as Monday Egbe (32) and Kenneth Nnoga (28), in connection with the heinous crime. The arrests were made on May 28, 2025, following an intensive investigation that led authorities to a hideout in a neighboring state. [2]
According to police reports, the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to uncover more details about the kidnapping and murder. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has reassured the public of the command’s commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice and urged citizens to provide any information that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
The tragic loss of Ifeoma Esther Onyekwelu underscores the escalating security challenges in the region and the urgent need for enhanced protective measures for citizens, especially those in vulnerable positions.
