In a brewing controversy centered around market leadership titles, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu‑Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and nationally recognized as the Iyaloja‑General of Nigerian market women, has been challenged by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, over her use of the title within the Benin Kingdom.
During a courtesy visit to the Oba’s Palace, Mrs. Tinubu‑Ojo announced her intention to inaugurate Pastor Josephine Ivbazebule as an Iyaloja for all markets in Edo State. The visit, however, took an unexpected turn when the monarch declared that the concept of a general Iyaloja is foreign to Benin culture. [1]
Oba Ewuare II told Mrs. Tinubu‑Ojo that what exists in his kingdom is the title Iyeki — a localized market leader for each specific market, selected by traders and confirmed by the palace, carrying both administrative and cultural roles. He emphasized that this system is deeply rooted in tradition and spiritual responsibility. [2]
“The title ‘Iyaloja’ is alien to us here in Benin. In Benin, we have our culture,” the monarch asserted, urging respect for traditional structures rather than imposing external systems. [3]
Chief Osaro Idah, appointed by the Oba to clarify further, explained that each market—such as Oba Market or Ogiso Market—has its own independent Iyeki with roles that transcend mere coordination, including fulfilling duties in market shrines on behalf of the palace. He warned that attempts to centralize market leadership under one title are inconsistent with cultural norms. [3]
In response, Mrs. Tinubu‑Ojo reportedly clarified that her visit was motivated by respect and consultation, not to force the adoption of titles. However, the clash has sparked debate over cultural identity, power, and the intersection of political influence with traditional institutions.
