The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticized Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, labeling him a “serial loser relying on propaganda.” This rebuke follows Rhodes-Vivour’s persistent critiques of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his declared intention to contest the Lagos governorship again in 2027.

APC’s Critique of Rhodes-Vivour

In a statement, the Lagos APC accused Rhodes-Vivour of lacking a substantive political agenda and depending on misinformation to gain public attention. They dismissed his political ambitions as baseless, asserting that he has consistently failed to resonate with the electorate.

Rhodes-Vivour’s Political Aspirations

Despite the APC’s criticisms, Rhodes-Vivour remains resolute in his political pursuits. He has announced plans to run for the Lagos governorship again in 2027, expressing confidence in the Labour Party’s growing strength and structure to secure victory. He emphasized the party’s continuous efforts to consolidate and strategize since the 2023 elections. [1]

Criticism of Tinubu’s ReformsRhodes-Vivour has been vocal in his criticism of President Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira. He argues that these policies have disproportionately benefited the elite while exacerbating hardship for ordinary Nigerians. He stated, “The only people that seem to be benefitting from these reforms are maybe the bankers, the people in government, and the president’s friends.” [2]

Disruption of ADC Declaration Event

Rhodes-Vivour’s political activities have faced challenges, notably the disruption of his planned formal declaration into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The event was marred by violence and a heavy security presence, with reports of thugs and security operatives dispersing supporters and assaulting his personal photographer. Eyewitnesses alleged that the police, alongside armed groups, blocked access to the original venue, citing directives from higher authorities. [3]

Looking Ahead As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Lagos is poised for intense competition. Rhodes-Vivour’s unwavering commitment to his political goals, despite opposition and challenges, indicates a potentially contentious electoral battle ahead. The APC’s strong stance against him suggests that the ruling party is preparing to defend its position vigorously.
