TETFund Calls for Increased Education Funding, Curriculum Overhaul!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has urged the Nigerian government to boost education financing and modernise curricula to align with global workforce demands. Speaking at a policy forum in Abuja, TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono emphasised that current funding levels are inadequate for meaningful reform.
“We must meet UNESCO’s recommendation of allocating 15–20% of national budgets to education. Our future depends on it,” Echono said.
Key Points:
- Nigeria’s education allocation has consistently fallen below the global benchmark.
- TETFund advocates a shift from theory-heavy curricula to industry-relevant skills and digital competencies.
- Urged collaboration between academia, industry, and government for curriculum reform.
Why It Matters:
- Underfunding limits research, infrastructure, and human capital development.
- Outdated curricula leave graduates ill-prepared for modern jobs.
- Education reform is vital for economic competitiveness and poverty reduction.
What to Watch:
- 2026 budget allocations to the education sector.
- Policy actions from the Federal Ministry of Education.
- Stakeholder push for revised national education standards.
