Teacher in police net for tying, beating pupil in Bauchi!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old Almajiri (Tsangaya) teacher, Lawal Nasiru, after an 11-year-old pupil was allegedly tied with a heavy rope and brutally beaten in Darazo Local Government Area. The incident, which left the child with visible injuries to his hands and legs, was reported to police on September 22.
According to the police public relations officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, the complainant — identified as Idris Mohammed — brought the injured child to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Darazo where the boy, named in reports as Sa’id (or Sani) Sani / Sani Abdullahi (sources differ slightly on spelling), received first aid and was taken to the General Hospital, Darazo, for further treatment.
Preliminary police findings allege that the teacher used a heavy rope to restrain the pupil and then assaulted him with a stick and a thick electrical cable, causing multiple injuries described as “various degrees of injuries” to the child’s hands and legs. The Darazo Divisional Police Officer led operatives to the scene and the suspect was immediately apprehended.
Police say Nasiru is currently in custody and the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution for offences including grievous hurt, cruelty to a child, criminal force and wrongful confinement. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted restraining the child but claimed it was to stop him from running away before his parents arrived — an account police are investigating.
Child-rights and education observers have in recent years highlighted recurring reports of abuse in some Tsangaya/Almajiri schools, and incidents like this renew calls for better oversight of informal Qur’anic schools and protection measures for vulnerable children. Sele Media Africa will follow up with the Bauchi police command and local social-welfare authorities for updates on the child’s medical condition and the progress of the investigation.
Sele Media Africa condemns any form of child abuse and calls on authorities to ensure a thorough, transparent investigation and swift prosecution where warranted. We also urge local welfare and education agencies to support the injured child and review safeguards for Almajiri pupils across the state.
