Port Harcourt — Environmental and human rights activist Ann-Kio Briggs has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu, arguing that lifting the emergency rule in Rivers State does not constitute a favour to the people. According to Briggs, the six‑month suspension of elected government left Rivers residents suffering, and the restoration of democratic governance should not be framed as a gift. Briggs stressed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has enjoyed strong grassroots support from women, market traders, and citizens, but lamented that despite this backing, little progress has been seen in terms of justice, peace, security, or development under the emergency period. She said Tinubu’s involvement in the crisis, especially the suspension of locally elected leaders, has not helped the people. She further called for accountability, arguing that the people of Rivers deserve more than symbolic gestures, noting that sincere reconciliation should lead to tangible improvements in their daily lives.
