Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Nigerian lawmaker Babajimi Benson has called for deeper strategic cooperation between Nigeria and the United States to combat rising security challenges across West Africa. He made the remarks during a security policy forum in Abuja.
“A stronger partnership between Nigeria and the US is not just desirable—it is critical to our ability to address terrorism, arms trafficking, and cyber threats,” said Benson, Chairman of the House Committee on Defence.
Key Details:
- Benson urged enhanced intelligence sharing, military training, and tech-based collaboration.
- He praised existing bilateral ties but stressed the need for more dynamic frameworks to address evolving threats like banditry and insurgency.
- The lawmaker also advocated for local capacity building and US support in modernising Nigeria’s defence infrastructure.
Why It Matters:
- Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, from Boko Haram insurgency to farmer-herder clashes and oil theft.
- Stronger foreign partnerships could bolster Nigeria’s fight against regional insecurity and transnational crimes.
- – US–Africa defence cooperation is also seen as a counterbalance to growing Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
What to Watch:
- Potential new Nigeria–US security pacts or defence funding proposals.
- Expansion of US military advisory roles or joint counterterrorism initiatives.
- Nigerian legislative follow-ups on defence sector reforms tied to international partnerships.
