Soludo’s Proposed Airport at Anambra Industrial Park Sparks Mixed Reactions
Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled plans to construct a new airport in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area, as part of his administration’s vision to transform the state into a smart mega city. The proposed airport is intended to complement a planned industrial park, aiming to create an aerotropolis that integrates aviation infrastructure with commercial, residential, and logistics facilities [1] .
During a recent site tour, Mr. Martins Nwafor, Managing Director of Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport and Chairman of the newly inaugurated Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, described the project as a “game changer” that could unlock significant economic opportunities in the state. He emphasized that the integration of aviation infrastructure with surrounding facilities would create a dynamic airport-driven city capable of attracting investment [2] .
However, the announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, has denied reports of any immediate plans to build another airport in the state. He clarified that while the concept of an aerotropolis is part of long-term development strategies, there is no current approval or funding allocated for a new airport project. Dr. Mefor emphasized that the government’s focus remains on completing the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City and enhancing existing infrastructure before considering additional airport developments [3] .
Community leaders in Ndikelionwu have expressed support for the proposed project, highlighting the potential economic benefits and pledging cooperation to ensure its success. Nonetheless, the conflicting statements from state officials have led to public confusion regarding the project’s status and timeline.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await official clarification on the proposed airport’s feasibility, funding, and integration with Anambra’s broader development plans.
